The Advantage and Disadvantage of Hyaluronic Acid Filler and Calcium Filler.

Since baby face has been emerging as trend recently, the most favorite petit plastic procedure is filler! Filler has different characteristics depending on each type, so it important to choose the product that suits to your condition. There are two main types of fillers. It's "hyaluronic acid (HA)" and "calcium".

[What is hyaluronic acid?]
Hyaluronic acid constitutes a smooth connective tissue in the human body, a vitreous body in the eyeball, a cartilage tissue and joint fluid. It acts as a cellular matrix which binds cells in the dermis together.

Hyaluronic acid is the main ingredient that fills collagen and elastin in the dermis which plays a role in transmitting the nutrients of living cells. It prevents evaporation of the moisture in the skin and at the same time, it maintains the proper amount of moisture in the skin by high poster of water absorption. The ability of the hyaluronic acid to absorb water is excellent because 1 molecule of hyaluronic acid traps 214 water molecules.

The Advantage and Disadvantage of hyaluronic acid filler Advantages: Injected components of filler can be dissolved.
Disadvantages: The duration of hyaluronic acid filler is not permanent, so the maintenance period is usually 6 months to 1 year depending on condition of individual. Therefore, to maintain the desired shape, it is recommended to get a filler injection periodically.
Representatively, there are Juvederm, Restylane, Tissuefill, Princess, Elravie, Cleviel, Bellast, and Perfectha.

Since hyaluronic acid’s component is same with the main components in the human body, It has a high level of preference because of the safety. The hyaluronic acid filler has the advantage that it can be dissolved right after the procedure by injecting dissolve enzyme if the patient doesn’t like after the procedure. However, it has the disadvantage that it needs to be injected periodically to maintain every 6 months to 1 year.

[Now let's look at the non-hyaluronic acid filler.]
Calcium filler is mainly composed of bone component such as calcium and minerals.
After the procedure, it promotes the formation of natural collagen in the body to minimize the deformation at the injection area. Calcium filler lasts for about 1 ~ 2 years which has longer maintenance period than hyaluronic acid filler. It has high level of satisfaction because it has high elasticity and viscosity that gives volume effect especially the nose bridge area. However, unlike hyaluronic acid filler, there is a disadvantage that it can’t dissolve by dissolve enzyme injection and difficult to remove part even the patient doesn’t like it after the procedure.

The Advantage and Disadvantage of calcium filler
Advantages: maintenance period is longer than hyaluronic acid filler. (1 year ~ 2 years)
Disadvantage: It can’t dissolve by dissolve enzyme injection.
Representatively, Non-hyaluronic acid fillers are Sculptra, Radiesse, Facetem, Ellanse, and Artefill.
