Functional rhinoplasty methods, correct the shape and rhinitis problems at the same time!

Since nose is located at the center of our face, it is considered as the main factor that decides the facial balance and harmony, depending on its shape and height. As plastic surgery is gaining positive recognition, the number of people who seek rhinoplasty for impression improvement is increasing. Also, “Functional rhinoplasty” which is a resolution to both aesthetic and functional problem, is gaining popularity.

The most common nose related diseases are nasal septum deviation, sinusitis and nasal valve stenosis. According to Wonjin Plastic Surgery Hospital, “When a patient has problems with the internal structure of the nose, functional rhinoplasty is recommended since it corrects the functional problems and provides aesthetic resolution customized on every individual’s condition at the same time.”

Deviated nasal septum refers to a disease wherein the septum, the middle area of the nose is bent and crooked, causing functional problems such as nasal congestion etc. The only solution to this is a surgery that will straighten the septum cartilage, and if these problems are neglected, it may result to rhinitis and sinusitis so it is best to get necessary treatments as soon as possible.

Rhinitis refers to an inflammatory disease caused on the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity, resulting to symptoms such as nasal discharge, nasal congestion, sneezing, itchiness etc. Sinusitis is a disease wherein the paranasal cavity (empty space of the facial bone near the nose area) is not ventilated or excreted properly. If chronic sinusitis symptoms continue for over 3 months, then related surgery and treatments are mandatory.

Nasal valve stenosis is referred to as a state where the nasal valve (roof-like area located on the upper septum) is narrowed. Since the nasal valve is considered as the crucial area which controls the breathing, slight narrowing can result to severe nasal congestion. As a resolution, having nasal valve reconstruction surgery can help widen the nasal valve into its original state.

Since rhinoplasty requires implant insertion, it is very important to clearly understand the patient’s type and appropriate surgery method before the surgery as hasty diagnosis can result to side effects such as infections, contractures etc. Therefore, one must thoroughly consult a skilled doctor with a lot of experience before having the surgery.

Infection, bleeding can normally happen after rhinoplasty, but the degree differs among every individual. Laying down on the stomach or facing down should be avoided, and one must refrain from touching the scar area or removing the scabs inside the nostrils. Lastly, drinking and smoking must be prohibited for at least 4 weeks since it slows down the recovery.
