Misconceptions about rhinoplasty
Misconceptions about rhinoplasty
Recently Ms. Kwon Hyekyung (alias, 24) received rhinoplasty.
Her nose tip was wide and gave her a dull appearance. She wanted a more refined look and decided to get rhinoplasty. However, the people around her commented that her nose tip became red whenever she went outside.
Most aesthetic surgeries are received during the cold winter month. With the extended holidays and long recovery time required after surgeries, it is much more efficient to get surgeries when the weather is cooler. However, there are some misconceptions that people have.
With the help of plastic surgery expert Dr. Park Wonjin (Gangnam Wonjin Plastic Surgery Clinic) we will learn more about these plastic surgery misconceptions.
Incorrect information about post rhinoplasty operation
- If the weather is cold, the nose tip can appear red
This is the most common misconception about rhinoplasty. Even if you did not get your nose done, the nose tip becoming red in the cold winter is a normal occurrence.
Cold weather can constrict the blood vessels. Blood collects in the constricted vessels and when going to a warmer room, the blood flows out of the nose tip making it appear red. Nevertheless, if the nose tip becomes red regardless of the weather than this can be due to a complication caused by the implant or at worse an infection from rhinoplasty.
- The nose becomes more oily after rhinoplasty
It can be difficult to face wash cleanly for 7~10 days after nose plastic surgery. This can result in a noticeable amount of dead skin cells and you may believe this is due to the nose surgery. This will naturally improve over time as you are able to face wash properly.
- The nose tip becomes inflexible after rhinoplasty
Many people falsely believe that the nose tip will become inflexible or rigid after surgery. However, that is not always the case. Depending on the nose implant used and the surgical method the results can differ.
When surgery uses large 'L' shaped implants or septal cartilage, the mobility of the nose tip can become limited. On the other hand, surgery that uses a straight implant in the nose bridge with separate nose tip cartilage results in a nose tip that is naturally mobile after 2~3 months time.
Dr. Park Wonjin states, "since the nose is the center of the face, even if the nose tip is slightly changed it can lead to a person's appearance becoming different." He continues, "instead of just believing incorrect plastic surgery information it is best to be properly informed through consulting with a plastic surgery expert. It is important to be well aware of the surgical method and process before deciding to get any kind of plastic surgery."

I have an consultation for rhinoplasty, I have a dorsal hump on my nose that I want removed but I also want to have my nasal bridge reduced so that it dips in a little bit and to have the tip more up-turned.
