Entropion may lead to vision loss!

There are cases where the eyelashes often poke and irritate the surface of the eyes. This may be due to upper eyelids that turn inwards due to congenital reasons or droopy eyelids caused by aging.

This condition is called Entropion that causes symptoms like discomfort, watery eyes and mucous discharge. If these symptoms are neglected, the friction can lead to vision loss, conjunctivitis and many other eye diseases.

If the symptoms aren’t severe, it could be easily treated with lubricating ointments or artificial tears, but more complicated remedies must be given in case of severe symptoms or children in their development period. This is because such symptoms naturally disappear as children grow up, but the possibility of recurrence is quite high and visions loss due to astigmatism and amblyopia could be inevitable.

Mild symptoms can be relieved by pulling out a few ingrown eyelashes, but it is quite ineffective since eyelashes grow back again. Therefore, immediate treatment if you experience serious pain and discomfort.

It is important to get a specific diagnosis about your eye condition and the causes from the ophthalmologist, but plastic surgery like double eyelid surgery can be a resolution for both aesthetic and functional problems. Other eye related diseases must be treated in the ophthalmology department.

Friction of the eyelashes can be corrected by surgical methods. Part of the muscle is excised and sutured through double eyelid surgery in order to prevent the eyelashes from rubbing and scratching the surface of the eyes. The surgical methods vary depending on the symptoms. If the eyelashes located on the front corner is causing irritation, then incisional, non-incisional double eyelid surgery, or epicanthoplasty can improve the symptom. If the irritation is due to droopy upper eyelids and eyelashes, then ptosis correction is a better resolution.
